Vintage Aircraft Restoration

ProFormance Metals keep a wide range of materials that can be used in Vintage Aircraft Restoration. Our stocks of 4130 and BS4 T45 allow for restoration or production of many various aircraft and in many cases using the original sizes and period correct profiles.

Due to the nature of the average small quantity requirement, we are able to offer a re profiling service to produce streamline, oval, rectangle and square section on 1 length MOQ’s.

We ensure that our material is produced from approved sources and manufactured to the full specification to ensure the highest quality in material and full traceability for airworthiness.

Ford GT Crashes at SPA WEC 6hour

ProFormance are pleased to have worked alongside engineers and designers in the construction of the new model of ford GT race cars.

Our material knowledge of materials, their properties and applications were proven when an incident  during the World Endurance Championship 6 hour event at Spa Francorchamp resulted in a high speed impact at the famous Eau Rouge.

“Everything is okay,” said Mücke after his hospital trip. “I feel okay and it is good to know we have a strong car. Thank you to the team for building me a safe car.”

Tube profiles : Size range expansion

We are pleased to have expanded our tooling range for the cold rolling production of round tube to various shaped tube profiles.

Streamline oval Tube

High tensile steels, Aluminium, Titanium’s that are usually found as round tubes only can now be re profiled into a large variety of sections such as:

  • Streamline / Aerofoil
  • Oval / Ellipse
  • Rectangle (radius corners)
  • Square (radius corners)

With a minimum order quantity of 1 length/ piece for tube profiling, it allows a cost effective supply for prototyping, small production, restoration & repairs.

Welton Soapbox Derby 2015 – Video’s now live

2015 saw the debut of Team ProFormance in the Welton Soapbox derby.

We strapped a Go-pro to our soapbox gravity racer to record the footage and get a feel to what it was like for our driver.

The footage provided great feedback on the positive and negatives of our chassis design and how it handled and should help us improve for next year.

Brisca F2 stock car Sponsorship

We have been working closely with local driver Jez Watts in the design and build of his Brisca F2 stock car.

A modern BriSCA F2 is a purpose-built race car with front engine, rear-wheel drive, and open-wheeled with the driver located centrally.

Cars make use of an aerofoil mounted on top of the roof and are normally powered by a 2 litre 8 valve Ford engine.

Jez has had access to our ROP510, T45 and other grades of tubing that are commonly used in chassis and roll over protection construction which has enabled him to build a strong chassis and can control the weight distribution throughout the vehicle.

We look forward to following his progress and designs are already in progress for further weight saving and chassis improvement over the winter build season.

BS4 T45 Oval Tube

This weeks Re rolling was for a customer who’s suspension componants required an oval tube from BS4 T45 steel round tube using 1.500″ diameter with a 2.0mm wall.

With BS4T45 to BS5T100 in accordance with BS6S100 condition tube containing the following properties:

Tensile: 700 – 900MPa,
0.2% Yield 620MPa minimum
Hardness Test: 201min – 262 max HB or 210min – 275max HV.

The finished article will not only improve aesthetics of the vehicle, but the quality of our materials will ensure that it can withstand the high end of motorsport application it has been designed for.

The major advantages of the re rolling process are:

  •  Producing small batch quantities / prototyping before we can produce as cold drawn profiles.

  •  Improving strength of existing profile by using high strength materials usually limited to round only.

  •  Reducing weight from existing parts by using materials with higher Tensile and Yield strengths.

  •  Experimenting with material grades and pushing engineering boundaries.

  •  Customising your size and design from the various options available on the tooling list.

  • Quick 5-7 day turnaround time to turn round tube to oval ,flat side oval and streamline.

This unique non-motorised racing event challenges both experienced racers and amateurs alike; to design and build traditional or outrageous soapbox dream machines, and compete against the clock in a downhill race.

We used our ROPT510  tube for the roll hoop and chassis construction.

ERW box section was used to tie in the floor due to the ease of working with flat section.

The steering rack was from a Go Kart and extended with a T45 tube sleeve to extend the length of the column.

Our choice of wheels were 20″ BMX wheels for their durability and ease of supply. The bearings were cleaned and degreased to allow for maximum rotation and reduced friction.

The rear of the car was constructed using two bmx frames that were stripped of their components with a tube sleeved and welded where the pedals once used to be.

New brake pads were also added and a  foot pedal was fabricated to enable the driver to apply brakes to the left and right wheels with the same stopping pressure.

The body construction was made from various grades of plastic sheeting which were cut to shape and mounted to the steel chassis.

The livery was designed between ourselves and the guys at Tailormade signs who printed and laminated it onto high quality vinyl wrap.

It was then applied in house and we were happy with the finished article.

Unfortunately the weather was the only disappointment to the day with rain showers for most of the day.

This didn’t put a dampner on the spirits of the competitors or the spectators who turned up to watch over 42 teams compete.
